Mus. 397-400

Manuscript. Complete set of four partbooks containing English consort music, copied by John Lilly; English, 1630s. A component of the so-called 'Great Set', which also includes a score-book Mus. 2, two further partbook sets Mus. 401-2 and Mus. 403-8, and an organ-book Mus. 436.   • Mus. 397: 42 folios, foliated in modern pencil. Collation: A6 (= ff. 1-6), B6 (ff. 7-12), C6 (ff. 13-18), D6 (ff. 19-24), E6 (ff. 25-30), F6 (ff. 31-6), G6 (ff. 37-41, [42]). Unused ruled staves on ff. 11r, 12r and 40v-[42]v.
  • Mus. 398: 42 folios, foliated in modern pencil. Collation: A6 (= ff. 1-6), B6 (ff. 7-12), C6 (ff. 13-18), D6 (ff. 19-24), E6 (ff. 25-30), F6 (ff. 31-6), G6 (ff. 37-40, [41-2]). Unused ruled staves on ff. 40v-[42]v. The first few leaves of the textblock show signs of water damage, and a perforation of the leaves (near the centre of the topmost stave) extends from f.1 to c. f. 33; both of these accidents occurred before binding.
  • Mus. 399: 44 folios, foliated in modern pencil. Collation: A6 (= ff. 1-6), B6 (ff. 7-12), C2 (ff. 13-14), D6 (ff. 15-20), E6 (ff. 21-6), F6 (ff. 27-32), G6 (ff. 33-8), H6 (ff. 39-41, [42-4]). Unused ruled staves on ff. 11v-12r and 41v-[44v].
  • Mus. 400: 41 folios, foliated in modern pencil. Collation: probably originally A8 (of which two leaves are apparently excised; = ff. 1-6), B4 (ff. 7-10), C8 (ff. 11-18), D4 (ff. 19-22), E8 (ff. 23-30), F4 (ff. 31-4), G8 (of which leaf G8 is excised; ff. 35-40, [41]). Unused ruled staves on ff. 40v-[41]v.
'Aldrich binding' Type 1. Spines gold-tooled 'FANT / G / 4.B.', and numbered '1' to '4'; edges marbled. Bookplate 2. 19th-century shelfmarks: I.5.7-10.

Provenance: from the Hatton collection (see Bibliography below); then part of the Aldrich bequest, listed in Dowding (main hand) at position N.1.6 : 'Fancies / MS. anonymous. 4 vols'; the shelfmark 'N.6' is written on the front flyleaf of each partbook.
