Mus. 382-4

Manuscript. Complete set of three partbooks, containing six suites by Valentine Oldis, copied by Edward Lowe; English, after 1660. The copies probably derive from Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Mus. Sch. G.612, which was given to Lowe by Oldis.

Oblong format, 163 x 97 mm. Each partbook comprises 18 folios, partly foliated in modern pencil. Collation of all three partbooks: A8, B8, C2. Each partbook is stab-sewn into a late 17th-century binding of thin red card. Bookplate 2 in Mus. 383 only. 19th-century shelfmarks: I.4.94-6.

Provenance: probably from the Aldrich bequest, but not recorded in any of the 18th-century catalogues of the Christ Church collections. Placed at position M.4.28 by Hind (who added that shelfmark in ink on the front flyleaf of Mus. 383), but not described by Hind in his annotations to the early catalogues.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 13.

This is one of the many music manuscripts at Christ Church copied by Edward Lowe.
