Mus. 37 (pp. 1-24)

Manuscript. Giacomo Carissimi, oratorio 'Jephte'. Score; music copied by Francis Smith, words copied by Henry Aldrich. English, late 17th century.

Upright format, 357 x 237 mm. Apparently a gathering of 6 bifolios (collation not visible); 12 folios in total, paginated 1-24 in modern pencil. Unused ruled staves on pp. 23-4. No early bookplate. Now bound into Mus. 37, a late 18th-century guardbook bound in white parchment over boards. Annotation by Malchair on p. 1: 'Jephta - Oratorio di Giacomo Carissimi', together with a reference (at the foot of the page) to Athanasius Kircher's account of the work.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717 as 'Jeptha's Vow set to Music' (annotated by a later hand as being 'wanting'), to which Dowding adds: 'MS. 6. parts in Score'. Its placement within Mus. 37, a late 18th-century guardbook, explains the annotation 'wanting'.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 5.
