Mus. 364

Manuscript. Principally copy in score (without words) of psalms and other metrical items from Thomas Ravenscroft's The whole book of Psalms (London, 1621), all in 4-voice harmonizations; copyist unidentified, English, probably mid-late 17th century. (For a printed copy of Ravenscroft's 1621 psalter, see the copy at Mus. 1116.) A few inconsequential musical jottings have been added on previously unused staves by various 18th-century hands, including Richard Goodson Jr (f. 1v).

Oblong format, 205 x 103 mm. 32 folios, foliated in modern pencil. Late 17th-century binding of brown leather over boards, gold-tooled with fillets and small ornaments; rebacked in 1976. Annotations: 'James Burry' (inside upper cover); 'Tho. Maxwell' (inside lower cover). No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.4.76.

Provenance: presumably from the Goodson bequest, on account of the presence of music copied by Richard Goodson Jr. Not listed in any of the 18th-century catalogues of the Christ Church music collections, but the presence of the shelfmark 'M.4.27' on f. 1r shows that the volume was at Christ Church in the mid 18th-century. Its omission from the supplementary list added by Hind to Dowding (which does not list any item at position M.4.27) may be due to the fact that there are no titles or composer attributions in Mus. 364, making it hard to describe accurately in words.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 12.
