Mus. 360

Manuscript. Vocal exercises, treble voice-parts, and rudiments for singers, compiled by various copyists, including Richard Goodson Sr, with a later addition by Richard Goodson Jr. English, c. 1700 and later.

The list of contents below includes only pieces copied at the front of the volume (ff. 1r-10r). The rear of the volume (ff. 38v-34r) and the inside lower cover have been used for copying additional scales, vocal exercises, and jottings of rudimentary music theory. At least 4 copyists, as follows:

Oblong format, 200 x 97 mm. 38 surviving folios; leaves have been excised from the front and rear of the volume, and from within the textblock. Foliation is in modern pencil, and was adjusted in July 2001; microfilms made before that date will not show the adjustments. Unused ruled staves on ff. 9r and 11v-33v. Contemporary binding of brown leather over boards, gold-tooled with fillets and small ornaments. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.4.72.

Provenance: not listed in any of the 18th-century catalogues, but presumably from the Goodson bequest, and possibly used for the training of boy choristers.
