Oblong format, 290 x 120 mm. Ten gatherings, comprising 38 folios in total. The gatherings have been numbered '1-10' in ink by the copyist (lower left-hand corner of the first page of each gathering), and are now bound as follows:

  • gatherings 7 (ff. 1-4), 8 (ff. 5-8), 9 (ff. 9-12) and 10 (ff. 13-14) = item 1;
  • gatherings 1 (ff. 15-18), 2 (ff. 19-22) and 3 (ff. 23-6) = item 2;
  • gatherings 4 (ff. 27-30), 5 (ff. 31-4) and 6 (ff. 35-8) = item 3.

Foliation is in modern ink. Unused ruled staves on ff. 38r-v. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.4.69. Early 20th-century binding of limp vellum with ties; no trace remains of any earlier binding.

Provenance: from the Goodson bequest, listed in Clement 1747 as 'Cantate [subsequently changed to 'Cantatas'] Segr Iacomo Charissimi MS No. 59', and in Malchair 1787 (f. 13) as 'Cantatas single Voice & bass, no Cover Carissimi'. Clement's number-label ('59') is intact on f. 38v.
