Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, item G23, as 'A Collection of Ital: Music. Ferabosco', and in Dowding (main hand) as 'Cantus d'il Ferabosco il primo Libro de' Madrigali à 4 voc. Venice 1542'. Oblong format, 213 x 155 mm. Mid-late C16th binding of stiff card with vellum spines. The upper covers (excepting Mus. 298) are annotated with part-names and 'Madrigalle de ferabosco' (various spellings) in an unidentified hand, probably late C16th. On the upper cover of Mus. 297, a different hand of uncertain date has written out details taken from the titlepage, in large lettering using a broad-nibbed pen. Bookplate 2 in all four partbooks.
