Mus. 294-6

Printed. Three partbooks from a set of four (lacking Basso Continuo).

Mus. 294-6
Hodemont, Léonard de, ca. 1575-1636 Grove
Armonica recreatione[.] Villanelli a tre voci, con il basso continuo. Di Leonardo Hodimontio canonico di S. Materno, et maestro della Chiesa Cathedrale di Liegi.
Antwerp: Appresso Petro Phalesio, 1625
Mus. 294: Tenore over canto; Mus. 295: Tenore over canto; Mus. 296: Basso.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest. In Archives 1717 and Dowding (main hand) the set is split over two different locations. At least two partbooks were at shelfmark G12 (see the entry in Archives 1717: 'Villanelli's Ital: Songs' [subsequently marked 'wanting'], qualified in Dowding as being 'Imperfect'); another was at K12 (Archives 1717: 'Villanelli's Songs for 3 Voices', qualified in Dowding as 'Antw. 1625. only the Tenor v. G. no. 12'). By 1778, when Burney drew up his catalogue, the three surviving partbooks had evidently been reunited, for his entry (f. 2v) reads 'Villanelli a 3. Voc. Hodimontio. Anv. 1625'.

Oblong format, 207 x 163 mm. Early C20th binding of limp vellum with ties. Pen-trials on the last page of Mus. 296 are smudged and indecipherable. The shelfmark 'K.13', written in ink on the titlepage of Mus. 295, does not correspond to the catalogue entries cited above, and may be an interim mark. No early bookplates. C19th shelfmarks: I.4.[6]-8.
