Mus. 15 (ff. 1-43)

Manuscript. Works and sketches by Henry Aldrich, largely autograph; also keyboard parts for fantasia-suites by John Coprario, copied by Aldrich; English, last quarter of 17th century. Copying occurs both at the front of the volume, and at the rear with the volume inverted, as follows:

  • items 1-22: copied at the front by Aldrich, excepting item 10, which is copied by Richard Goodson Sr.
  • items 23-7: copied at the rear by Aldrich, with the volume inverted.

  • items 1-2 (canons): almost certainly copied from Mus. 47, items 33-4. The canons have been worked against a plainsong' (= cantus firmus) used by Thomas Morley in A plaine and easie introduction to practicall musicke (1597, 2/1608), a copy of which Aldrich possessed. (See Mus. 804; the relevant passage on canons occurs on pp. 99-103.)

Upright format, 357 x 240 mm. Collation: originally 8 gatherings, each of 3 nested bifolios (= 6 folios); 48 folios in total. Five leaves have been excised, as follows:

  • following f. 1: one leaf removed (leaving item 3 incomplete).
  • following f. 3: one leaf removed before or during copying of item 7, which is not interrupted by the excision.
  • following f. 28: one leaf removed before or during copying of item 18, which is not interrupted by the excsion.
  • following f. 34: two leaves removed (= end of item 21 and start of item 22).
