Mus. 15

Two manuscripts, both largely copied by Henry Aldrich, and bound together during his lifetime; English, late 17th century. The volume comprises:

  • Mus. 15 (ff. 1-43). Works and sketches by Henry Aldrich, largely autograph; also keyboard parts for fantasia-suites by John Coprario, copied by Aldrich; English, last quarter of 17th century. This manuscript uses standard 5-lined staves.
  • Mus. 15 (ff. 44-89). Vocal and instrumental music copied in keyboard score, and keyboard music, copied by Henry Aldrich; English, 1660s or later. This manuscript uses 6-lined staves for keyboard notation.

Upright format, 357 x 240 mm. 'Aldrich binding' Type 1. Bookplate 2. 19th-century shelfmark: H.1.15.

Provenance: Henry Aldrich; then possibly Sampson Estwick, a variant of whose name appears on the front flyleaf as a pen-trial ('Samul Estwck His Book'). The earliest catalogue entry for this volume is by Hind (in Archives 1717), item H57, where it is listed as 'Te Deum &c. Out of the Deep &c. I waited patiently &c. M.S. Folio'. In Mus. 15 itself, the shelfmark 'H.57' is written on both of the two front flyleaves of the volume.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 2.
