Mus. 1219(B)

Manuscript. Songs and fragments in score; English, late 17th century (items 2-4; copyist unidentified), with an addition (item 1) made by Richard Goodson Jr in the early 18th century. Formerly Mus. 1219, item 2.

Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.

1   f. 1r
2 In a soft vision of the night ('Urania to Parthenissa') ff. 1v-2v
3 '... but Winter puts out their desire' (fragment) f. 3r
4 I dare not seek to raise your fame (incomplete) f. 3v

Upright format, 285 x 185 mm. Unstitched gathering of 3 leaves (1 bifolio, enclosing the left-hand sheet of a second bifolio); stitch-holes in the gutter show that this was formerly a nested and bound bifolio, presumably part of a larger volume. No early bookplate. Now loose within an early 20th century portfolio folder containing all 10 sections of Mus. 1219, the contents of which were foliated and allocated new call-numbers (including the alphabetic letters A-U) in September 1990, with further minor adjustments made in August 1998. In microfilms made before that date and in references in the Locke literature, this item is numbered '2'.

Provenance unknown, although the presence of music copied by Richard Goodson Jr strongly suggests that it descends from the Goodson bequest. Not recorded in any early catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.β., item 20: 'A song by Locke. MS. end of XVII. cent:'; in Mus. 1219(B) itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.β' is written in red crayon at the top of f.1r.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 39.
