Mus. 1215(6)

Manuscript. [Giacomo Carissimi], cantata 'Care selve beate' for bass voice and continuo; copyist unidentified; English, mid 17th century. There are copies of this cantata by Henry Aldrich in Mus. 13/15 (opening only) and Mus. 18/7.

Upright format, 322 x 213 mm. Two quired bifolia; four folios in total; foliation is in modern pencil. Unused ruled staves on ff. 3v-4v. Formerly folded twice horizontally (see marks on f. 4v); stab-holes in the gutter suggest that these bifolia have been extracted from a bound volume. Now pasted within a modern card folder, and mounted impermanently on a cord within an early 20th-century folder of stiff card and vellum containing all 11 sections of Mus. 1215.

Provenance unknown, but most likely from the Aldrich bequest (on the grounds that Aldrich made two copies of this cantata; see above). Formerly shelved within the Portfolios at position I.2.δ (the reference 'I.2.δ' is written in red crayon on f. 1r). In Havergal Summary, the contents of that portfolio are described only in summary as '7 Latin motetts; 5 Italian cantatas, & 2 fragments; & 8 Songs & Duets &c: Anon: MS.'

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 39.
