Mus. 1211

Manuscript. Performing vocal part in C4 clef for a connected sequence of dramatic scenes including a 'dialogue between Grumpo and the Witch' (f. 1r) and a 'dialogue between Time, Fortune, Cupid and Hymen' (f. 2r), all apparently by 'Mr Pigot' (= Francis Pigott?); English, last quarter of the 17th century. Music copyist unidentified; for a list of other manuscripts at Christ Church copied by this scribe, see the entry for Mus. 865(A). Other sections of this work, partly in the hand of the same copyist, are in Mus. 90-91. The text-underlay in Mus. 1211 may have been added by a second copyist, also unidentified.

Upright format, 325 x 205 mm. Two nested bifolios; 4 folios in total. Foliation was added in July 1999, and will not be present on microfilms made before that date; ff. 4r-v are unused ruled staves. Contemporary paper wrappers; the inside upper wrapper is annotated 'The Tennor Vocal Musick'. Now stitched into a folder of modern card, and mounted impermanently on a cord within an early 20th-century folder of stiff card and vellum. Formerly Mus. 1131.

Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest (on the grounds that the same copyist's hand occurs in Mus. 90-1, which is more securely of Goodson provenance). Formerly shelved within the Portfolios at position I.2.ε; the reference ' I.2.ε' is written in red crayon on the upper original wrapper. In Havergal Summary, it was included under the summary heading of '5 odes in English, 4 in Latin'.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 39.
