Mus. 1188-9 (ff. 36-7)

Manuscript. Fragment in score (opening 'worthy to be praysed; there is no end of his greatness') from an unidentified verse anthem, copied by Richard Goodson Jr, and including a small cancel leaf on f. 36v (concealing a rejected reading) that may imply that the anthem is of his own composition. English, early 18th century.

Upright format, 380 x 245 mm. Bifolio, mounted on a guard. The cancel leaf, formerly pinned to f. 36v and now pasted at the edge, is desigated f. 36*; its own verso contains a brief unidentified sketch, also by Goodson Jr. No early bookplate. Now bound within Mus. 1188-9, an early C20th guardbook of stiff card and vellum.

Provenance: presumably from the Goodson bequest. Not recorded in any Christ Church catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.γ under the general heading of '14 Anonymous anthems, mostly separate, with fragments of others, & 3 services in parts. MS'; in Mus. 1188-9 (ff. 36-7) itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.γ' is written in red crayon at the top of f. 36r.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 39.
