Mus. 1188-9 (ff. 32-5)

Manuscript. Two bifolios containing sketches, drafts and revisions by Henry Aldrich, largely untexted, and including drafts of the opening sections of the anthems 'Give ear, O Lord' and 'Behold now praise the Lord'. English, late 17th century.

Bifolio 1:

32r (inverted) Intermediate draft for ['Behold now praise the Lord']
33r-32v (inverted) Intermediate draft for unidentified work a4 in D minor
33v Two preliminary drafts for ['Behold now praise the Lord']
33v (inverted) Conclusion of an unidentified work a4 in A minor.
Bifolio 2:
34r Preliminary draft for 'Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer'
34v-35v Prelimary sketches for material reworked on ff. 33r-32v
Oblong format, 295 x 227 mm. Each bifolio is pasted to a guard. No early bookplate. On f. 32r, a printed label '[Mus.] 1036'. Now bound within Mus. 1188-9, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum.

Provenance unknown. Not recorded in any Christ Church catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.γ under the general heading of '14 Anonymous anthems, mostly separate, with fragments of others, & 3 services in parts. MS'; in Mus. 1188-9 (ff. 32-5) itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.γ' is written in red crayon at the top of f. 32r.
