Mus. 1188-9 (ff. 1-6)

Manuscript. Jubilate in F by Matthew Locke; autograph score. English, mid 17th century.

Upright format, 305 x 195 mm. Single bifolio pasted to a guard, followed by a nested pair of bifolios, stitched to a guard; 6 folios in total; foliation is modern. The two outer leaves (ff. 1, 6) originally served as covers, and contain no music. The titlepage (f.1) is annotated 'O be joyful. A vers Anthem for ffoure Voyces, & Instruments at Pleasure. By Matt: Locke', also autograph. No early bookplate. Now bound within Mus. 1188-9, an early C20th guardbook of stiff card and vellum.

Provenance unknown; unrecorded before Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.α, item 11: 'An anthem by Locke Original MS.'; the portfolio reference 'I.2.α' is written in red crayon at the top of f.1r.

This score probably formerly enclosed the set of performing parts now bound as Mus. 1188-9 (ff. 7-14).
