Mus. 1154(A)

Manuscript. [Maurizio Cazzati], dialogue 'Crutior in hac flamma'. Score, probably English, 2nd half of 17th century; the copyist, who is unidentified, has also transcribed the words of the dialogue on f. 1v, and headed the piece (on f. 1r): 'Dialogus. A. 2 voc. Angelus/Anima. Italica comp:' Later addition on f. 5r: minuet in g for keyboard by 'W[illiam]. Turner' [ii], autograph; English, last quarter of 17th century.

Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.

1 Maurizio Cazzati Crucior in hac flamma ff. 2r-4v
2 William Turner (ii) Minuet in g for keyboard f. 5r

Upright format. Two adjacent bifolios (ff. 2-5; 307 x 200 mm.) enclosed within a contemporary paper wrapper (ff. 1 and 6; 290 x 190 mm.). Foliation is modern. Blank ruled staves on f. 5v. Stab-holes in the gutter imply that the sheets were once sewn together, possibly together with other contents. Formerly folded once horizontally. The whole is enclosed within an early 18th-century wrapper of stiff paper, the front cover of which has been annotated by Malchair: 'Purgatorio an Italian Duet'. Now stitched into a modern card folder, and mounted impermanently on a cord within an early 20th-century folder of stiff card and vellum containing all 13 sections of Mus. 1154.

Provenance unknown. First recorded by Hind in Archives 1717, where it is listed at shelfmark H51 as 'Dialogus à 2 voc. Angelus / Anima'; in Mus. 1154(A) itself, the shelfmark 'H.51' is written in ink on f.1r. Subsequently shelved within the Portfolios at position I.2.δ (the reference 'I.2.δ' is written in red crayon on the 18th-century upper wrapper). In Havergal Summary, the contents of that portfolio are described only in summary as '7 Latin motetts; 5 Italian cantatas, & 2 fragments; & 8 Songs & Duets &c: Anon: MS.'

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 60.
