Mus. 1149

Manuscript. Song 'The Dream' (opening 'When gentle sleep had charm'd my breast'); music by 'Dr [William] Crofts'. English, after 1713. Copied by at least two unidentified hands.

Upright format, 300 x 233 mm. Two nested bifolios within contemporary paper wrappers; contemporary pagination '1-8', which is now supplemented by a modern foliation (1r-6v) that includes the wrappers. The front wrapper (f. 1r) is inscribed 'Mr Goodsons' in an unidentified 18th-century hand. There are vertical and horizontal fold-marks running through the whole MS. No early bookplate. Now within an early 20th-century binding of stiff card and vellum. Annotation on modern front flyleaf by York Powell, who has also annotated f. 1r with 'Ch Ch Liby Oxford'.

Provenance: presumably from the Goodson bequest (as stated on f. 1r), but not recorded in any catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.α, item 10: ' "The dream" by Dr Croft (Goodson's coll:) MS. XVIII. cent:'; in Mus. 1149 itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.α' is written in brown crayon on the original front wrapper (f. 1r).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.
