Mus. 1144

Manuscript. A four-voice version of the Preces, Second Responses and Litany by Thomas Tallis, copied in score without words by Henry Aldrich (ff. 4r-8r); English, late 17th century. The remainder of the volume is ruled with unused staves. This manuscript may have served as copy for the version of the same music published by Havergal in 1847, a copy of which is now at Mus. 1123.

Upright format, 322 x 205 mm. 58 folios. Partial foliation added in pencil in February 1990; this will not be present in microfilms made before that date. Late 17th-century binding of stiff card; spine in vellum. Bookplate 2. Unusually, this volume has no 19th-century shelfmark.

Provenance: presumably from the Aldrich bequest. First recorded by Hind (in Archives 1717), item H59, as 'Piece of Musick in Score'; the shelfmark 'H.59' is written in Hind's hand on the front flyleaf.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.
