Mus. 1142b (ff. 52-3)

Manuscript. [John Blow], ode ['Gesta Britannica']; soprano vocal part, beginning 'Auditis, auditis', copied by Richard Goodson Sr.; English, late 17th century. The ode's two sections, 'Non arma regum' and 'Dum pulsa strident timpana', are here designated '1st Song' and '2d Song'. The music ultimately derives from Blow's autograph scores, Mus. 685-6.

Upright format, 383 x 247 mm. Two single sheets, mounted on guards. Unused ruled staves on f. 52r. Formerly folded once vertically and once horizontally. Bound into Mus. 1142b, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum. No early bookplate.

Provenance unknown. Possibly shelved within the Portfolios at position I.2.ε, which according to Havergal Summary included '5 odes in English, 4 in Latin', although the reference 'I.2.ε' is not written on Mus. 1142b (ff. 52-3) itself.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.
