Mus. 1141b (ff. 86-9)

Manuscript. Fair copies in score of movements from single-key suites or 'sets' in A major; English, probably early 18th century. Probably part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyist/composer, who has not been identified, is here designated as Copyist 'Z'; he was also responsible for other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6.

In the description and inventory of contents below, sets in the same key are distinguished from one another by means of roman numerals (I, II, etc), using and extending the numbering sequence of Mus. 34-6. Within each set, the number of movements is shown in round brackets: '(1-5)', etc.

The scores in this manuscript comprise what appears to be a seven-movement set in A major, with the movements arranged in the order shown in the inventory below; movements 1-4 have been so numbered by the copyist himself. However, Copyist Z also created other copies of these movements in which they are differently ordered, and it seems likely that the 'set' as presented here is an interim version of a work that was subsequently shortened; in addition, one of its movements was reallocated to a different set. Thus items 1 and 3 in the inventory below became the first two movements of the set now designated as A major/VIII (1-3), performers' parts for which are in Mus. 1140, ff. 5-10; and item 6 in the inventory below subsequently became the sixth movement of the set now designated as A major/I (1-6), performers' parts for which are in Mus. 34-6/5. The remaining movements seem not to have been subsequently incorporated into single-key sets. For a full list of the sources for these movements, see the catalogue at the end of the entry for Mus. 34-6.

Upright format, c. 305 x 235 mm. Fascicle of two quired bifolia, now bound into Mus. 1141b, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum. The leaves are foliated '86-9' in modern pencil; this forms part of a single foliation sequence that runs continuously from Mus. 1142a to Mus. 1142d. There is a major tear running horizontally across f. 89, together with bookworm damage; both are repaired with pastedown paper strips on f. 89r. No early bookplate.

Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.
