Mus. 1133
Manuscript. A miscellany of instrumental movements (including
sketches and drafts) copied in score; English, early 18th century.
Mus. 1133 comprises 14 separate sheets, bound together in largely
random order within an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff
card and vellum (upright format, 615 x 487 mm); the sheets are
numbered in modern pencil.
Sheets 1-3 and 5-11 contain instrumental movements scored for
two trebles and figured bass; these probably formed part of the
repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The
copyist/composer, who has not been identified, is here designated
as 'Copyist Z'; he was also responsible for other autograph scores
and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection.
For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6.
Sheets 4 and 12-14 were copied by different scribes. Sheets 12-14
are in the hand of unidentified Copyist X, who appears to have
worked in close proximity to Copyist Z. The hand of the copyist
responsible for Sheet 4 has not been located elsewhere in the
Christ Church music collections.
In the descriptions of contents below, suites or 'sets' of movements
in the same key are distinguished from one another by means of
roman numerals (I, II, etc), using and extending the numbering
sequence of Mus. 34-6. Within each set, the number of movements
is shown in round brackets: '(1-5)', etc.
- Sheet 1: originally a bifolium, folded horizontally; now presented
as a single sheet in upright format, 585 x 470 mm. Recto: draft
composing scores of two movements in A major, with extensive
emendations and deletions, copied by Copyist Z. Verso: a neat
fair copy of the second movement drafted on the recto. Neither
of these movements appears to have been subsequently incorporated
into a single-key set, and this is their only known source.
- Sheet 2: oblong format, 473 x 215 mm. Recto and verso: drafts
and sketches by Copyist Z for two movements from the 5-movement
set in C major copied in full on sheet 5 below.
- Sheet 3: oblong format, 475 x 293 mm; this has been cut down
from a larger sheet. Recto: draft of a movement in A major, preceded
by a deleted draft of part of the same movement, and followed
by a brief sketch of unrelated material also in A major. Verso:
draft of a movement in A major, followed by two deleted drafts
of an unrelated movement also in A major. All copied by Copyist
Z. None of these movements appears to have been subsequently
incorporated into a single-key set, and this is their only known
source.
- Sheet 4: oblong format, 470 x 95 mm. Recto: a short 3-voice setting
of the words 'Glory to God on high, on Earth Peace, and Good
Will toward Men'; copyist unidentified. Verso: unused ruled staves.
- Sheet 5: originally a bifolium, folded horizontally; now presented
as a single sheet in upright format, 585 x 475 mm. Recto and
verso: fair copy of a 5-movement set in C major, copied by Copyist
Z. There are drafts and sketches of the first and fifth movements
of this set on sheet 2 above. These are the only known sources
of the set now designated as C major/VII (1-5).
- Sheet 6: oblong format, 455 x 170 mm. Recto: fair copy of a movement
in C major headed 'Two Trompets', copied by Copyist Z. Verso
(copied with the sheet inverted): fair copy of another movement
in C major, copied by Copyist Z. This is the only known source
of these two movements, which were possibly intended to form
a set with the movements on sheets 7-8 below.
- Sheet 7: oblong format, 465 x 297 mm. Recto: draft (with minor
revisions) of a movement in C major, copied by Copyist Z. Verso:
unused ruled staves. This is the only known source of this movement,
which was possibly intended to form a set with the movements
on sheets 6 above and 8 below.
- Sheet 8: oblong format, 470 x 297 mm. Recto: fair copy of a movement
in C major, copied by Copyist Z. Verso: unused ruled staves.
This is the only known source of this movement, which was possibly
intended to form a set with the movements on sheets 6-7 above.
- Sheet 9: oblong format, 247 x 95 mm, cut down from a larger sheet,
and formerly pinned to the recto of sheet 11 below. Recto: the
ending of the movement in C major for trumpet, violin and bass
copied on sheet 11 recto below. Verso: trimmed instructions referring
to a 'strain' of an unidentified movement; otherwise unused ruled
staves. All copied by Copyist Z.
- Sheet 10: originally a bifolium, folded horizontally; now presented
as a single sheet in upright format, 597 x 473 mm. Recto and
verso: incomplete draft of a 4-movement set in C major, copied
by Copyist Z. The two movement on the recto are both unfinished;
the two shorter movements on the verso (copied with the sheet
inverted) are complete. This is the only known source of the
set now designated as C major/VIII (1-4).
- Sheet 11: originally a bifolium, folded horizontally; now presented
as a single sheet in upright format, 600 x 477 mm. Recto: fair
copy of a movement in F major, followed by an unrelated movement
in C major scored for 'Trumpet', 'Violin' and bass; the ending
of the latter is copied on sheet 9 above, which was formerly
pinned to the end of sheet 11 recto. Verso: fair copies of two
movements in f minor; the first is a set of variations on a ground.
All copied by Copyist Z. None of these movements appears to have
been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set, and this
is their only known source.
- Sheets 12-14: each c. 470 x 300 mm. Fair copy by Copyist X of
a ritornello movement in A major, copied in 5-stave score. Possibly
related to the similar movement copied by Copyist X in Mus. 1125, pp. 19-25, which is also in 5-stave score, and is headed
'Curtain Tune' and 'Calo'. The verso of sheet 14 is blank.
Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with
all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.). Formerly
Mus. 1040 (see label pasted to sheet 14 verso).
Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 37.
