Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, item L4, as 'A Set of French Music by Le Jeune. 6 Books', and in Dowding (main hand) as 'Taille le Printems. à 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Paris 1603'. Oblong format, 222 x 174 mm. Early C17th French bindings of vellum over thin card, gold-tooled, with binder's instructions for tooling written on the inside upper covers (formerly concealed under pastedown leaves, several of which are now loose): 'filet palme et laurier (bande sur le dos) et ce chiffre: [monogram 'BH' or 'RC']'. All books have this design in gilt on the upper and lower covers, stamped 'RC' in Mus. 1059 and 1061, 'BH' in the others. Gilt edges; fragments of green ties remain in several of the inside covers. Every printed page within this set has been annotated in red ink with ruled frames enclosing the printed contents, and underlinings on the titlepages. Pen-trials on front pastedown (now unpasted) of Mus. 1062 include 'Demande' and 'Responce'. Bookplate 2 in all six partbooks. C19th shelfmarks: K.2.34-9.
