Mus. 1006-9

Manuscript. Four partbooks from a set of five, containing instrumental works with accompaniments for theorbo, lyra viol or keyboard by Charles Coleman, John Carwarden, George Hudson, James Hinton, John Jenkins and Christopher Gibbons. Copied in or for use in Oxford, principally by two unidentified scribes copying before 1664 (on grounds of references to Christopher Gibbons as 'Mr'; Gibbons's Oxford D. Mus. was conferred in 1664); later additions by Richard Goodson Sr and Richard Goodson Jr.

The surviving partbooks bear the following designations: Mus. 1007: '1 Treble' / Mus. 1009: '2d Treble' / Mus. 1008: 'Bassus' / Mus. 1006: parts for unfigured bass; also keyboard parts for items 15-16 in the inventory below. A fifth partbook containing parts for lyra viol and keyboard is now missing, but is referred to in the surviving volumes; see for example Mus. 1006, p. 58: 'There is a full Harpsecord part to these Ayres in the lyra booke'.

Copyists as follows:

  • Items 1-9; 10-14 (in Mus. 1006 only) and 15-18: unidentified Copyist A. Small variations in the hand may imply that more than one scribe was responsible for these copies.
  • Items 10-14 (in Mus. 1007-9 only): unidentified copyist B.
  • Item 19 is a later addition by Richard Goodson Sr. (This is one of the many music manuscripts at Christ Church copied by Richard Goodson Sr.)
  • Item 20 is a later addition by Richard Goodson Jr.
Comments on individual items:
  • Item 6: the identity of James Hinton is uncertain, but a musician of this name joined the Waits of London in 1640 (replacing John Adson).
  • Items 17-18: according to Holman (in Bibliography below), these two suites were assembled by selecting the almans and corants from fantasia-suites by Christopher Gibbons, and were 'apparently re-ordered for use in Oxford'. Some of the same movements, copied as fantasia-suites, occur in the partbooks Mus. 414-6 (copied by Henry Bowman, with organ parts copied by Henry Aldrich in Mus. 1180), in score copied by Francis Withy (Mus. 8, layer 2), and in score copied by Richard Goodson Sr (Mus. 620 (pp. 102-133)).
Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.
The first column gives the modern numbering of the pieces; the second shows numbering used by the copyist(s).
