Manuscript. The Kyrie, Gloria and Credo of a 'Messa a Cinque
Voci con stromenti' in C major by Giovanni Legrenzi, copied in
score; unidentified Italian copyist, late 17th century.
Oblong format, 290 x 220 mm. 75 folios, partly paginated in ink
by the copyist. Physical structure:
- Kyrie and Gloria: copied consecutively on 12 gatherings, which
have been numbered by the copyist in the top left-hand corner
of the first page of each gathering. This section of the manuscript
has been paginated by the copyist. Collation: gathering '1' (A4;
pp. 1-8), '2' (B4; pp. 9-16), '3' (C4; pp. 17-24), '4' (D4; pp.
25-32), '5' (E4; pp. 33-40), '6' (F4; pp. 41-8), '7' (G4; pp.
49-56), '8' (H4, of which leaf H4 is excised; pp. 57-62), '9'
(I4; pp. 63-70), '10' (J4; pp. 71-8), '11' (K4; pp. 79-86), '12'
(L4; pp. 87-[93]). Unused ruled staves on pp. [91-4].
- Credo: copied on 7 gatherings, which continue to be numbered
in the top left-hand corner of the first page of each gathering.
This section of the manuscript is unpaginated. Collation: gathering
'13' (M4), '14' (N4), '15' (O4), '16' (P4), '17' (Q4), '18' (R4),
'19' (S4). The opening page of gathering N4 has been used as
a titlepage. Unused ruled staves on the last two pages of gathering
S.
Late 17th-century English binding of brown leather over boards,
blind-tooled with fillets and small ornaments. Bookplate 3.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717 at position C5 as 'Latin Anthems'; and in Dowding (main
hand) as 'A Mass for 5 Voices with Instrumts by Legrenzi'. In
Mus. 1000 itself, the shelfmark 'C.5' is written in ink on then
inside upper cover.
