Manuscript fragments (English)

  • Binding fragment. Upper third of a bifolio probably from a 13th-century Sarum processional, including chants for the feast of the Purification. Stave length: c. 110 mm. Formerly a strengthener (and now loose) at the rear of Allestree b.7.19, a printed copy of Divi Alphonsi ... astronomicæ tabulæ in propriam integritatem restitutæ, qua in re P. Hamellius ... operam suam præstiti (Paris, 1545), in a plain 16th-century binding of brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets. A fragment from a different (non-notated) liturgical book is bound into the upper cover of this volume.
  • Binding fragment. Portions of two leaves from a 13th-century Sarum noted breviary, including chants for the season of Epiphany. Pasted to the inside upper and lower covers of Hyp.I.3, a printed copy of Matthias Flacius, Clavis scripturae s. seu de sermone sacrarum literarum (Basel, 1567). The volume was bound in Oxford in the 1580s, presumably shortly before its donation to Christ Church by Toby Mathew in 1583; see Neil R.   • Binding fragments. Portions of one or two leaves from a ?14th-century Sarum processional, including portions of the litany with music notation. Formerly bound within Archives x.c.4, a battels book for the years 1577-9; the fragments have now been lifted, and are now mounted on guards at the front of the volume.
  • Binding fragment. Portions of two leaves from a 14th-century Sarum gradual, including chants for the season of Lent. Formerly flyleaves (now lifted) on the inside upper and lower covers of Allestree J.5.2, a printed Sarum hymnal (London, 1555). The volume was bound in Oxford probably in the 1550s; see Neil R. Ker, Fragments of Medieval Manuscripts used as Pastedowns in Oxford Bindings, with a Survey of Oxford Binding c. 1515-1620, Oxford Bibliographical Society, Third Series, IV (Oxford, 2004), p. 35, no. 362.
  • Binding fragment. Portions of two leaves from a 14th-century Sarum gradual, including chants from the Commune Sanctorum. Formerly flyleaves (now lifted) on the inside upper and lower covers of f.7.15, a printed copy of Constantini Caesaris selectarum præceptionum, de agricultura libri uiginti, Jano Cornario medico physico interprete (Basel: Froben, 1538). The volume was bound in Oxford probably in the last third of the 16th century; see Neil R. Ker, Fragments of Medieval Manuscripts used as Pastedowns in Oxford Bindings, with a Survey of Oxford Binding c. 1515-1620, Oxford Bibliographical Society, Third Series, IV (Oxford, 2004), p. 142, no. 1547.   • Binding fragment. Two long narrow strips cut from a leaf of a ?14th-century Sarum gradual (two columns), including chants from the Commune Sanctorum (Confessors). Used as strengtheners in the binding of AC.5.5, a printed copy of Diodori Siculiu historiarum libri aliquot, qui extant, opera et studio Vincentii Obsopoei in lucem editi (Basel, [1539]). Contemporary binding of brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets and a small centrepiece.
  • Binding fragment. Two long narrow strips cut from a leaf of a ?14th-century Sarum antiphoner. Used as strengtheners in the binding of f.1.16, a printed copy of Explicationes evangeliorum et epistolarum . . . autore Ioanne Spangenbergio (Basel, 1564). Contemporary binding of limp vellum. Provenance: from the library of Robert Burton; see Nicolas K. Kiessling, The Library of Robert Burton (Oxford, 1988), no. 1511.
  • Binding fragments. Two long narrow strips cut from a leaf of a ?15th-century Sarum antiphoner, including chants for the feasts of St Stephen and St John the Evangelist. Used as strengtheners in the binding of On.3.7, a two-tract printed copy of the works of Galen (Paris, 1554). Mid 16th-century binding of plain brown leather over boards, rebacked in the 18th century.
  • Binding fragments. Two long narrow strips cut from a ?15th-century Sarum noted breviary, including fragments of chants for the feast of Holy Innocents. Used as strengtheners at the front and rear of Archives lvi.c.29, a collection of bailiffs' accounts for the year 1576. The volume was probably bound in Oxford; see Neil R. Flyleaves at the front and rear of Hyp.F.58, a printed copy of Commentarius in Epistolam Pauli ad Galatas, scriptus a Nicolao Hemmingo (Wittenberg, 1564). Contemporary binding of brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets and a centrepiece.
  • Binding fragments. Lower half of a bifolio extracted from a ?15th century Sarum processional, including chants for the Adoration of the Cross on Good Friday. Flyleaf at the rear of Hyp.L.112, a printed copy of Georgii Pachymerii Hieromnemonis, in universam fere Aristotelis philosophiam, epitome (Basel, 1560). Contemporary binding of brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets and a centrepiece. Provenance: according to an annotation on the titlepage, the volume was donated to Christ Church in 1601 by John Best, an alumnus of the college.
  • Binding fragment. Portion of a leaf from a ?15th-century Sarum ?noted breviary (two columns), including Matins antiphons for the feast of St Andrew. Pasted to the inside upper cover of OX.5.22, a printed copy of Petri Bembi epistolarum Leonis decimi pontificis max. nomine scriptarum libri sexdecim. Ad Paulum tertium pont. Max. Romam missi (? Basel, 1547); binding of brown leather over boards, upper and lower covers gold-tooled with a centrepiece.
  • Binding fragments. Two long strips cut from two non-adjacent leaves of a 15th-century Sarum gradual, including chants for the seasons of Easter and Pentecost. Used as strengtheners at the front and rear of Archives lvi.c.12, a collection of bailiffs' accounts for the year 1559. The volume was probably bound in Oxford; see Neil R.   • Binding fragments. Two leaves from an unidentified service-book (? Sarum, ?15th century) giving readings from the Book of Isaiah, partially notated on a monotone. Pasted to the inside upper and lower covers of OO.2.3, a printed copy of Guidonis Bonati Foroliviensis mathematici de astronomia tractatus x. . . . Adiectus est Cl. Ptolemæi liber Fructus [Centiloquium], cum commentariis Georgii Trapezuntii (Basel, 1550). Bound in Oxford. An annotation on the titlepage records that the volume was donated to Christ Church in 1601 by John Lant (graduated M.A. in 1579).
  • Binding fragments. Small portions of leaves cut from at least two different late medieval notated liturgical books, one of which was probably a gradual. Used as strengtheners at the front and rear of NA.8.6 and NA.8.8, two volumes from a five-volume parallel Greek/Latin Bible printed in Basel in 1550. Mid 16th-century bindings of brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with rolls and fillets.
